Sure, Jazz Fest just ended—punctuated by a stellar Arcade Fire set and featuring surprises like Hurray for the Riff Raff (above)—but May is starting out with a bang. Already, Charles Bradley played at One Eyed Jack’s, the Black Lips hit Siberia, and Perfect Pussy came through Gasa Gasa… and that doesn’t include the plethora of post-festival shows with Jazz Fest artists. (Or the recent dilemma of seeing M. Ward or Kishi Bashi in town this past Thursday.)
And in all likelihood, the best concert you’ll see in New Orleans this year could come in the next two months.
Can’t miss for May/June
Critically beloved (and also widely embraced) artists such as tUnE-yArDs, Jack White and Cut Copy are all passing through. In previous opportunities to review those groups, Cut Copy owned an entire (stacked) festival lineup and tUnE-yArDs did the same despite opening for the likes of John Fogerty and Arcade Fire. And when you dig deeper than the mass appreciated, you can find bands with diehard audiences such as Modest Mouse, Deafheaven, Little Dragon, Tim & Eric, or even Bruno Mars.
Above all others however, there’s one act to not be denied. They are the elder statesmen of the modern indie rock scene, fluctuating between under-the-radar and radio friendly several times throughout their long career. Bands are big as Phoenix have bowed to them, working as openers, out of mere respect and acknowledgment of this band’s place in the modern music spectrum. And on top of all that, rumors point toward a new album coming this year. Spoon doesn’t play many tour dates, but they have one in New Orleans at Civic Center on 5/11.
If spending $50…
[Spoon, 5/11 at Civic $25] +
[tUnE-yArDs, 5/31 at Republic—$17]
[Blackbird Blackbird, 6/22 at Hi-Ho Lounge—$10] = $42, and enough for a few drinks at Hi-Ho at least.
