The new year means new announcements—most notably lineups for this year’s BUKU Project (March with The Flaming Lips and Phantogram) and JazzFest (hello Arcade Fire). So while it’s easy to look ahead at the high profile goodness on the horizon, January and February may quietly be the best months in recent memory for live music in NOLA. And that’s without account for acts that have already passed through such as George Clinton and Dave Matthews…

Can’t miss for January/February

With the 2013 EOY season recently finished, a slew of the year’s Top 25 are passing through. Whether you make it to see Neko Case, Deafheaven, Waxahatchee or Disclosure, no nose-up music fan in your life can question the motives. (Toss Darkside in to that mix if you’d like, but that album was received as a “must” only by the Internet blog portion of EOY events.)

For more traditionalists, there’s hometown favorite Kermit Ruffins solely performing and leaving his kitchen behind for an evening. Modern punk royalty Oblivians get cozy at Siberia, Merge-founders Superchunk come through OEJs, and Neutral Milk Hotel sits in for a two-night stint at the Civic Center. Hell, Alec Ounsworth (of CYHSY-fame) is playing a living room. Any of those five could be a show you’re telling friends about in December and kids about sometime down the line.

But despite all the critical praise you could fact-check, the absolute most interesting gig you could take in happens next Friday. The sexually explicit, emphatic-beat laying Peaches comes to One Eyed Jacks—if the infamous Orange Club from Lost in Translation is your lone frame of reference, be prepared for much, much more.

If spending $50…

[Peaches, 1/24 at One Eyed Jack’s—$20] +

[Oblivians, 2/16 at Siberia—$12] +

[JD Samson + Men, 2/27—$10] = $42, plenty leftover for a beer or two.
