Two months down in New Orleans, and it seems like there’s a clear big five: Tiptina’s | One Eyed Jacks | Gasa Gasa | Siberia | Howlin’ Wolf.
You’ll find shows outside of that (see Washed Out coming to Republic this month or the massive festival that is Voodoo at City Park) but a majority of the college radio/blog-friendly/indie rock/call-it-what-you-want acts that pass through New Orleans focus on this handful of venues. (That is, if they don’t skip NOLA for Baton Rouge instead—damn that college town!) This is no by means troubling though, rather it’s an indication of the strength of New Orleans. While SF offered a bevy of options in this specific subset of music, NOLA blows the roof off selections for jazz, attracts a fair number of larger-than-life R&B or hip-hop acts, and boasts its own diverse music scene. So while the calendar here may be thinner, the music scene itself is certainly not. It may soon be time to significantly expand the scope of the monthly music calendar…
Can’t Miss for November 2013
The true centerpiece of November (and, besides Thanksgiving tour breaks, a reason the rest of the calendar feels light) is Voodoo Fest. While it’s an expensive endeavor, it’s hard to argue with rare appearances from bands like NIN and The Cure preceded by intriguing afternoon acts like Hockey, Those Darlins or Matt & Kim. So while the top individual set for the month may likely come from a normal night of Kurt Vile or Washed Out, City Park undoubtedly hosts the most efficient music watching in November.
If you’re spending $50…
[Kurt Vile—$15 11/5, Tue, One Eyed Jacks] +
[Thee Oh Sees/OBN III—$12, 11/6, Wed, One Eyed Jack’s] +
[Washed Out—$17, 11/8, Fri, Republic] =
$44 for a stellar individual week and a beer at the OBN III show (because you’ll need it for crowd spraying).
