Noise Pop 2013 slowly roars to a close at the start of March (did you miss the unbelievable set from Ty Segall’s Fuzz to finish February?). But the rest of the month in San Francisco music is as packed as you’d expect. The full curated calendar is below complete with a select playlist of artists coming to perform. But first, the SF Monthly Music Superlatives:
Can’t Miss for March 2013
There’s a ton to choose from. If you don’t have a Noise Pop badge, it might be hard to catch either DIIV or Toro y Moi/Sinkane at this point sadly. Whether or not you appreciate their antics, any music fan would do right by supporting The Black Lips on their current tour. It’s the band’s first back in the states since they spread the diplomacy of music in the Middle East last fall.
But this month, the top spot comes down to Foxygen or #BOTH, the Ted Leo/Aimee Mann collaboration. Leo’s writing prowess and live energy are legendary, as are Mann’s I’d suspect (but I cannot vouch first hand). The material from #BOTH has yet to be heard, however. And thus far in 2013, the most divisive LP (and therefore live act) is likely the duo Foxygen. They make wild collages of referential 60s/70s rock that rings true for many but rugs others the wrong way. It’s worth checking it out for yourself directly—the best bet gig in SF for March 2013 (3/22, Fri, at Brick+Mortar).
If you’re spending $50…
[#BOTH—$18 in advance, 3/26 or 3/27, Tues-Wed, BoTH ] +
[Black Lips—$16, $4 fees, 3/18, Mon, GAMH] =
$44. $6 can get at least one beer, right?
Both GAMH (5 shows) and The Independent (4) have more shows on the overall list, but for the combination of price and quality of act BoTH (Bottom of the Hill) is tough to beat in March. Grab tickets as soon as you can for Third Eye Blind, Wavves and/or #BOTH.
